Clinical reports by email
Another Bluebird innovation

Receiving patient information by email can be convenient.

However, unless encrypted, emailed patient information becomes a medico-legal minefield

Our latest innovation elegantly solves the problem.

Bluebird now provides 3 options to receive secure electronic clinical information. This newsletter outlines the 3 options we provide and attempts to outline the advantages of each. Hopefully this helps you to chose the one best suited for your practice.

1. Bluebird's Secure e-mail
Advantages:
  • No special software to install
  • Reports appear in your email package
  • You do not need to be on-line to read reports
  • You control your password on the Bluebird web service. To open the attachment you only need the password you have selected
  • This option is particularly attractive for practices that receive only a few reports each day. It means that you do not need to look in your Bluebird inbox only to find there are no reports
  • Future versions will allow you to select specific reports to come to your email e.g. only urgent reports or consultations
  • Cell phones that receive email (such as Blackberry) can have clinical reports arrive on the cell phone
Disadvantages:
  • Reports in your email package making it very difficult to search for previous reports and cumulative reports and graphs are not possible
  • Attachments are bigger than the reports that are downloaded by Bluebird's desktop applications.
  • Integration with your practice management system is difficult.
How to enable this service: Click the patient communication button (on the full report page on the web service) and select the preferences tab. You need to enter an email address and a password and decide if you want the reports labelled as read or not (on the web service).
Reading the PDF attachments requires a PDF reader such as Adobe's free reader (usually supplied with your computer).
 2. Bluebird's Web Service
Advantages:
  • Access from anywhere
  • No special software
  • Nothing to maintain
  • Historical archive of all your clinical information
  • May be used in conjunction with the offline Bluebird services
Disadvantages:
  • Broadband connection required
  • You must be on-line to read reports
The Bluebird web service is the backbone of the Bluebird service and for those on an ADSL or planning a broadband connection at some future time it is the logical first option. Begin building your clinical archive today - it is likely to be a valuable practice asset.
 3. Bluebird's Desktop applications
Advantages:
  • Works very well on a dial up connection - very light bandwidth requirement
  • Read off-line
  • Bundled with great tools to manage information
  • Electronic medical record options
  • Integrates with Bluebird's practice management
  • Integrates with several practice accounting systems
Disdvantages:
  • The applications run in your practice and require management (especially back ups).
